post IBC - 1

I had lots to do and actually still too busy, but I tried my best to find time for this introduction. This was my second IBC. After 2015, which was the first IBC of me & TVTechTR, I managed to come to Amsterdam as PRESS. This time I prefered to stay in Amsterdam, which was a good but expensive decision :) IBC, is a good event to see friends all over the world. It is also a good event, with the conference. But, the fair was not that attractive this year. There was no "killer application" this year. 4K is not going that fast, hence 8K is still too early to announce. SDI to IP conversion is not going as fast as expected. So there was no interesting.

IBC 2018

Dear colleagues, Thanks for your requests regarding IBC 2018.  Unfortunately my schedule is full. Hope to meet you at IBC 2019. I will try to find time for a quick visit to some of the stands, but as the conference is also full of interesting sessions, it seems that I will have really limited time.

IBC 2018

I will be attending IBC 2018 Conference between 12 - 16 September. There are some timeslots left for stand visits. Please send your inquiry to OzgurCosar@gmail.com... Hope best fair ever for all attendees.

figures of PayTV in Turkey, 2017 Q4

According to the data in the  report  of the Supreme Council of ICT, the market share of payTV is just 31%.  There are about 6,1M subscribers to payTV services in Turkey, where total number of households is assumed to be 20M. When we look at the distribution of technology; the payTV market is dominated by satellite, number of subscribers of CableTV is constant, IPTV is increasing but not as fast as expected. The OTT numbers are not available. I guess OTT is the main reason of slow progress in IPTV.

What will 5G bring to broadcasting?

To be honest, I do not know the answer of the question: What will 5G bring to broadcasting? But, with the help of some documents, I will try to comment on this. It would be great if you also can share your opinions. "Broadcast", "unicast" and "multicast" are different ways of connection. Visualization is always better way of explaining: As you can see in the figure above, Unicast is point to single   point connection; Broadcast is point to all connection; Multicast is point to many points connection.  In broadcast connections, quality does not depend on the number of receiving units. So for serving same data to crowded receipents some kind of broadcast network should be used.  Mobile networks were providing unicast connections, i.e. from the base station to the receiver. Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service ( MBMS ) is a broadcast/multicast service in mobile networks, which is available since 2009 . But it has not been common...

Figures of PayTV in Turkey, June 2016

According to the data in the report of the Supreme Council of ICT, the market share of payTV is just 30%.  There are about 6M subscribers to payTV services in Turkey, where total number of households is assumed to be 20M. FTA: Free to Air / Ücret ödemeden izlenilen televizyon PayTV subscribers are mainly taking service via satellite, 69%. Cable has a static number of subscribers, which is around 1,2M which makes 20% of payTV and IPTV has more to do, with just 11% of market share. PayTV operators should concentrate on increasing the market itself, before their share in the market. But as nearly all TV channels are FTA in Turkey, it is not a simple task.

e-Interview with Mr. Uygar BOYNUDELİK

It is my pleasure to introduce you Mr. Uygar BOYNUDELİK. He is a friend of mine who is working in the media business in Turkey.  1. Dear Mr. Boynudelik, let me start with a classical question. Can you please introduce yourself for my readers.  Dear Özgür, let me first start by thanking you for regulary writing blog posts and being so sincere and transparent and open-hearted as opposed to the general positioning in the industry. Frankly, I'm a fan of yours, truly :) Anyway, I can simply call myself an engineer who is quite interested in TV technologies. I'm really enjoying reading, writing, researching about it. This is what I do for a living (I’m in charge of STB product management in Turkcell) and also my beloved hobby. I keep writing on www.uygarboynudelik.com in Turkish and on www.turkishtvmarket.info in English since many years. I encourage your readers to have a look my web sites, at the end we’re living in a small industry J
